Buy Barcodes for Beer

By The Barcode Guru

The last several years have seen an explosion in the growth of the beer industry.  New breweries are popping up almost daily along with countless new beer-related products.   At Buyabarcode.com, we have long specialized in assisting young breweries launch their new beverages and to date have helped nearly 200 breweries with their barcodes.

So, to answer the most basic question we receive about buying barcodes for beer is exactly what type of barcode is needed on the bottle?  The answer is very simple: the UPC barcode.

In fact, all retail products use the UPC barcode, whether they be related to food, apparel, games, pharmaceutical, military, or even alcohol related like beer, wine, and liquor.  There are actually only two types of products that do not use the UPC Barcode and those are books and magazines.  However, if it is not a book or a magazine you are selling then you will be required to have a UPC barcode on your product.

The second most common question we receive regarding purchasing barcodes for beer is how many UPC barcodes are needed?  This question is best answered with a simple example:

Say you have one flavor of beer and you are selling it four ways: as a single 12-ounce bottle, a 6-pack, a 12-pack, and a case.  In this instance you will require 4 barcodes.  You would put a barcode on the single bottle.  You would also put a different barcode on the 6-pack, 12-pack, and the case.  Now, imagine you expanded your offering with a new flavor of beer and also sold it as a single 12-ounce bottle, a 6-pack, a 12-pack, and a case.  In this instance, you would now need a total of 8 barcodes to cover your entire line.

The reason you would need multiple UPC barcodes is because UPC barcodes are used primarily for inventory tracking.  If, for example, the 12-pack is selling faster than the individual 12-ounce bottle, the UPC barcode tells the store which product they need to re-order without them having to do a manual shelf count.
