“How do I get a bar code?”
In the retail business, there are few questions that get asked more often. Unfortunately, it happens to be one of the most difficult to answer.
"Go to the Uniform Code Council," is the common reply. "Then pay the $750 or more to join and then purchase the software that will allow you to generate the code. But if you have a Mac, then the software won't work. (They only make bar code software for PCs for some reason.) Oh, and make sure you put out the right bar code for the type of product you are selling or you'll screw everything up. And then make sure when you print the bar code it's printed at the correct resolution!"
When you tell a person all of this stuff who just spent their life savings on getting their product together as well as every ounce of mental and physical stamina, the prospect of getting a bar code can sometimes lead to tears.
So, in 1999, with the infernal question in mind, Erik Quisling, a fledgling entrepreneur and Humor author decided to figure out a better way to come up with a reply.
Buyabarcode.com was born.
Going to the Uniform Code Council himself, he joined, paid the dues, received his barcode prefix number, bought the software, figured out the printing issues, and read all of the fine print in the U.C.C. manual. To his surprise, after doing his homework, he realized that with his barcode prefix he could generate 100,000 12-digit UPC bar codes that would all be unique. And by selling these UPC bar codes one at a time, he could make life easy for anyone out there who only really needs a few bar codes at best.
Suddenly, the most difficult to answer question was now the easiest to answer. A genuine new service was born that everyone could smile about.
